School-Based Transition

School-Based Transition

School-Based Transition Plan

Our move to UVACanvas will take place over multiple semesters, with the first schools using UVACanvas in Spring 2023.

Fall 2022 Canvas Pilot

The Fall 2022 Canvas Pilot is underway with nine courses and over 300 students using UVACanvas as their learning management system (LMS). We will be collecting feedback that our pilot faculty, instructional designers, and students share with us throughout the Fall semester to help improve and prepare for our Spring 2023 Wave.

Spring 2023 Wave

Approximately 40% of faculty in participating schools and departments will be using UVACanvas in the Spring 2023 semester, including:

  • College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences: Art, Chemistry, Economics, Engagements, French, Mathematics, Politics, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology, and Statistics.
  • School of Data Science
  • School of Education and Human Development*
  • School of Continuing & Professional Studies*
  • Frank Batten School of Leadership & Public Policy

(*School of Education and Human Development and School of Continuing & Professional Studies will be transitioning from local, school-based instances of Canvas to our unified, central instance, UVACanvas.)

Key Dates – Spring 2023 Wave Schools and Departments

We will help you prepare to use UVACanvas in your courses next spring. Here’s what to expect:

  • September 20: UVA faculty will have the opportunity to experience UVACanvas! With this launch, several new UVACanvas resources will become available:
    • UVACanvas Workspace – Available now, this Workspace is a dedicated space for faculty to experiment with course development within UVACanvas. Log in to your UVACanvas to try your Workspace today!
    • Canvas Guides & Training Portal - Available 24/7, the Canvas Guides and Training Portal offers how-to guides and live remote and on-demand training for all aspects of Canvas use.
  • November 7 and Ongoing:
    • Migrated course site content will be available for your review.
    • As courses and instructors are added in the Student Information System (SIS), course shells will be created in UVACanvas for faculty to apply course content.
    • View Moving to UVACanvas for additional details.
  • January 18: Spring semester begins.
Assisted Course Site Migration – Spring 2023 Wave Schools and Departments

Course sites created for the Spring ’22 and Summer ‘22 terms will soon be automatically migrated from existing systems to UVACanvas. Course sites created for the Fall ‘22 semester will be automatically migrated after the semester has ended.

In addition to the course sites that will be automatically migrated, instructors had the opportunity to select up to five additional sites from previous semesters to be migrated. This step was optional and is not required for retaining access to the original versions of these sites in UVACollab.

All sites, including those that are not migrated, will remain accessible until at least December 2025; any readings, handouts, and other course material stored on those sites will remain available for viewing or download.

Summer, Fall 2023 Waves

Beginning with the Summer 2023 term and moving forward, the remaining participating schools will use UVACanvas for courses that are included in UVA's official academic catalog and listed in the Student Information System (SIS), including:

  • College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences: All remaining departments and programs
  • McIntire School of Commerce
  • School of Engineering and Applied Science
  • School of Medicine: Only the Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) and the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (BIMS) will use UVACanvas.
  • School of Nursing
  • School of Architecture
  • UVA’s College at Wise: Will remain on Moodle for Summer 2023 and begin using UVACanvas in the Fall 2023 semester.
  • Courses affiliated with the Office of the Provost
Key Dates – Summer and Fall 2023 Waves

The project team is working on key dates to support the Summer and Fall 2023 Wave. To help you get ready, transition activities such as training and assisted migration will take place in spring 2023. These activities will follow a similar pattern to the Spring 2023 Wave plan.

Summer 2023

All summer courses, excluding UVA’s College at Wise will use UVACanvas.

Fall 2023

All remaining courses will use UVACanvas.

Examples:

  • If you teach a course in UVA’s official academic catalog in Summer 2023, you will begin using UVACanvas in the Summer 2023 term.
  • If you do not teach any summer courses, you will be included in the Fall 2023 wave and will begin using UVACanvas the next time you teach a course.
Assisted Course Site Migration – Summer and Fall 2023 Waves

To help you prepare to use UVACanvas in your courses, course sites you have created between the 2022 Spring semester and the time of your transition will be automatically migrated from their existing systems to UVACanvas.

All sites, including those that are not migrated, will remain accessible until at least December 2025; any readings, handouts, and other course material stored on those sites will remain available for viewing or download.
