School-Based Transition
School-Based Transition Plan
Our move to UVACanvas has taken place over multiple semesters, with the first schools using UVACanvas in Spring 2023. As an initial step, the a UVACanvas Pilot was conducted in Fall 2022 and included nine courses and over 300 students using UVACanvas as their learning management system (LMS). Our pilot and Spring 2023 Wave faculty, instructional designers, and students shared feedback with us throughout the transition and has helped make improvements in preparation for the Fall 2023 wave.
Spring 2023 Wave
Approximately 40% of faculty in participating schools and departments moved to UVACanvas for the Spring 2023 semester, including:
- College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences: Art, Chemistry, Economics, Engagements, French, Mathematics, Politics, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology, and Statistics.
- School of Data Science
- School of Education and Human Development*
- School of Continuing & Professional Studies*
- Frank Batten School of Leadership & Public Policy
(*School of Education and Human Development and School of Continuing & Professional Studies will be transitioning from local, school-based instances of Canvas to our unified, central instance, UVACanvas.)

Assisted Course Site Migration – Spring 2023 Wave Schools and Departments
-
Course sites created for the Spring ’22 and Summer ‘22 terms were automatically migrated from existing systems to UVACanvas. Course sites created for the Fall ‘22 semester were automatically migrated after the semester ended.
In addition to the course sites that will be automatically migrated, instructors had the opportunity to select up to five additional sites from previous semesters to be migrated. This step was optional and is not required for retaining access to the original versions of these sites in UVACollab.
All sites, including those that are not migrated, will remain accessible until at least December 2025; any readings, handouts, and other course material stored on those sites will remain available for viewing or download.
Summer, Fall 2023 Waves
Beginning with the Summer 2023 term and moving forward, the remaining participating schools transitioned to UVACanvas for courses that are included in UVA's official academic catalog and listed in the Student Information System (SIS), including:
- College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences: All remaining departments and programs
